Wallace West barely saw any representation of queer folks growing up – and when he did, it was always couched in the context of a tragedy or punchline. Until in his early teens, that is, when he watched The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, an Oscar-winning movie about two drag queens and a trans woman traversing conservative rural Australia. In a flash, Wallace’s view of the world went from black and white to technicolor. Seeing unapologetically LGBTQIA+ folks being publicly celebrated imbued in him a sense of courage and confidence he hadn’t previously known – a legacy he took with him into adulthood.
