I couldn't give you the exact gauge of wire but we use it over the bathroom door and hang heavy towels from it. Very strong in my opinion.

The top piece measures 1 3/4 inch, so maybe this isn't the best option for you. There are towel racks that actually fasten to the door (instead of hanging over the door) and the width of the door isn't an issue, but you'd have to put holes in the door. The InterDesign Classico Over the Door coat and hat holder should. My door is about 1" and a quarter and the fits a little loose.

It’s approx 12”. It’s very nice, durable and well made. I’ve had it for 3 yrs. I’d def buy it again. I hope that helps
